Bring Your Own Cheese (BYOC) Party!

The other weekend the husband and I hosted out first BYOC party! All I can say is wow, what a success! The husband and I love hosting friends and family over for different events. Unfortunately, playing the role or host and hostess always comes with a price tag (yes, even pot lucks). You need to have some type of base spread when hosting people over to your party. For this gathering we wanted to do something that wouldn’t break the bank account as we prepare for our upcoming trip to Dublin and Scotland.

Grilled cheese we realize was the perfect solutions, because… well… who doesn’t love a good grilled cheese sandwich. A few weeks back we ran across a Buzzfeed article about 31 perfect grilled cheese sandwiches (or as they put it… better than your boyfriend grilled cheese sandwiches). We were drooling all over our keyboards scrolling through the list.

For this festive occasion we asked guests to arrive with a special cheese or creatively inspired ingredients.

We then provided the basics (delicious condiments, breads, a kale Caesar salad), two grilled cheese options from the Buzzfeed article and wine to pair with the cheeses.

The pre-made options we choose were the Jalapeno Popper Grilled Cheese (No. 1 on the Buzzfeed) and Fig, Manchego Grilled Cheese Sandwich on Olive Bread (No. 16 on the Buzzfeed). A little savory and a little sweet.

If you’re interested in hosting your own grilled cheese party here’s the spread we started, knowing that our guest were bringing cheeses and homemade tomato soup!

  • Savory and Spicy Condiments: caramelized onions, avocado, jalapeños, tomato, mushrooms, leafy greens, roasted butternut squash, grained mustard, dijon mustard, sweet and hot mustard, tarragon dijon mustard
  • Sweet and Tart Condiments: fig jam, marmalade jam, pecan pumpkin butter, homemade tomato-lemon jam, raspberry honey mustard, lemon curd
  • Fresh Herbs: fresh sage, rosemary, and basil
  • Breads: olive bread, sourdough bread

From there we set out the Panini press and griddle on the stove. The husband was the designated grilled cheese master, so that guest could mingle and assemble their grilled cheese masterpieces. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised (and my stomach very happy) by the different creations that were made. Here were some of the top contenders:

Grilled Cheese Option 1: Olive bread, hot and sweet mustard, manchego cheese, avocado, mild and sharp cheddar, and tomato jam

Grilled Cheese Option 2: Candied bacon, caramelized onion, rosemary olive oil bread, and mild cheddar

Grilled Cheese Option 3: Mushrooms, manchego cheese, cheddar cheese, jack cheese, tomato jam, dijon mustard, sour dough bread, scallions, and jalapeños (raw and sliced)

Grilled Cheese Option 4: Candied bacon, caramelized onions, mild cheddar, and rosemary olive oil bread

Grilled Cheese Option 5: Butternut squash; caramelized onions, pumpkin butter, fig jam, sharp cheddar cheese, manchego cheese, and olive bread

Grilled Cheese Option 6: Candied bacon, caramelized onions, fig jam, pumpkin butter, manchego cheese, and olive bread
